Growth factors are protein molecules produced by eukaryotic organisms that can stimulate the growth and differentiation of various tissues through various mechanisms. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-C or -2 (VEGF-C or VEGF-2) has been identified as specific growth factors for lymphatic endothelium. They exert their action through endothelial tyrosine kinase receptors such as flk1/kDR, flt1, and flt4. Currently, several experimental studies are underway to reproduce lymphangiogenesis in vitro and in vivo, to understand its implications in tumor metastasis, and its role in lymphatic-lymph node dysplasias.
