These stockings represent one of the most useful and effective aids in the treatment of lymphatic and venous insufficiency. Even in ancient times, Hippocrates highlighted the importance of applying external mechanical pressure in clinical situations where the limb suffered from a “disruption of intra-extravascular fluid exchanges” by using rudimentary sponge bandages. Then, in 1650, Richard Wiseman, a true precursor of modern methodologies, proposed leglets made of adjustable leather strings to combat edema in the lower limbs.

Subsequently, the technological evolution of materials and research on the physiopathology of edema have allowed us to reach the current methods of elastic compression with stockings made of different materials, adaptable to every type of pathology and each individual patient. These stockings are indeed a fundamental tool in controlling edema in the limbs.
